From: The Provincetown TheaterPremiere Play Reading: Funtimes in Babylon!
NEXT UP in our new play reading series, Spring Play Dates, on Thursday, March 30 at 7pm we’re thrilled to be presenting Funtimes in Babylon -- an in-depth exploration of the notorious real-life 1921 murder trials of silent film star Roscoe “Fatty” Arbuckle, written by Outer Cape playwright Racine Oxtoby.
Playwright and Actress Racine Oxtoby
Known to Provincetown Theater audiences as the actress who brought Laura Wingfield to life in our outdoor production of The Glass Menagerie two summers ago, as well as the sparkling ingenue in Mae West’s The Drag last year, Racine has simultaneously been hard at work on the historical drama Funtimes in Babylon for several years now.
In fact, along with her participation as a writer in the Provincetown Playwrights Lab, and The 24-Hour Plays, the Provincetown Theater granted Racine a summer scholarship at the Fine Arts Work Center in 2019 to work with Leigh Fondakowski (The Laramie Project) in a class that focused on writing historical drama culled from the public record. We’re very proud to continue the process of developing Racine’s work as a playwright, and give Funtimes in Babylon its debut reading in the 2023 Spring Play Dates. A discussion with the author will follow the presentation.
As performed by a talented group of actors from across the Cape, the cast for the Funtimes reading on March 30 at 7pm includes John Dennis Anderson, Eric Bomyea, Susanna Creel, Dave Haase, Peter Hendrick, Will Oxtoby, Jameson Redding, Vanessa Rose, Bill Salem, Daniel Wagner, and CJ Brooke as Roscoe Arbuckle.
Produced under the auspices of the Stephen Mindich Literary Project, the Spring Play Dates reading series is a free-to-the-public program, central to our mission in developing new plays at the Provincetown Theater.
