Also apparent at the 24-Hour Plays was the dazzling display of local playwrights engaged in our company's mission to help them grow and expand their talents. To that end, I’m thrilled to announce that over the next two months we’ll be producing several free-to-the-public presentations of new plays-in-development in our seasonal reading series, Spring Play Dates.
Supported and produced under the auspices of our play development program, The Stephen Mindich Literary Project, this year’s roster of free readings includes four new American works. Kicking off Spring Play Dates on Thursday, March 23 at 7pm will be Sarah Schulman’s new play Free Ali Free! Bob! A contemporary Chekhovian comedy about a group of artists and academics who find themselves thrown into disarray following the overseas arrest of their filmmaker ringleader, Free Ali! Free Bob! will feature a cast that includes Barzin Akhavan, Andrew Clemons, Susan Lambert, Laura Scribner, Jay Sefton, Anne Stott, and Matt McGrath.
For those who recall,The Lady Hamlet was also partially developed in this series in 2019. That play went on to receive a triumphant world premiere on our stage last summer, recently winning Best New Play of 2022 in the Boston Regional Broadwayworld.com Awards.
In the weeks ahead, Spring Play Dates will also be presenting readings by Outer Cape writers Racine Oxtoby with Funtimes in Babylon! on March 30 and Linda Fiorella's Beanie’s Last Stand on April 13. And returning from last year’s one-night free concert presentation -- with a more fully-developed script -- will be Jon Richardson’s musical Jack of Hearts on April 20.
Of course, none of this could happen without your support.
In association with the Stephen Mindich Literary Project, additional sponsorship for 2023 programming of Spring Play Dates has been generously provided by Gabby Hanna, Cynthia Newberry Martin, Jeff Peters, and East End Books. Curated by playwright and author Gary Garrison and myself, the Spring Play Dates presentations will be performed by actors from New York, Boston, and Cape Cod. Each reading will be followed by an audience discussion with the playwright, facilitated by series curators. And while admission is free of charge, we’re asking patrons to sign up on a “general admission” list in advance online at provincetowntheater.org.
