Harvey Fierstein’s Casa Valentina
Cape Cod Premiere Opens Season
I’m thrilled to open our season in May with the Cape Cod premiere of multi-Tony Award winner Harvey Fierstein’s insightful, hilarious and provocative new play, Casa Valentina.
Inspired by the true story of a mid-century sanctuary in the Catskills where men dressed as women, Casa Valentina reveals the crossroads of gender identity, sexual orientation, and the significance of community via a group of strangers whose lives are forever changed on a visit to the lodge in the summer of 1962.
4-Star Solo Show Festival
Cape Cod Premieres for New Theater Artists
For June, we’ll be offering a spanking-new edition of the ever-popular 4-Star Solo Show Festival, where each week of the month a different solo show by an up-and-coming American writer/performer hits our stage. (List still in formation; but expect music, laughter, meaning, and magic.)
The Fantasticks,
Landmark Musical Re-Imagined
East Coast Premiere Begins July 10
Indeed, for our summer show we’re very excited and honored to be producing the East Coast premiere of a newly re-imagined, re-gendered adaptation of the great American musical The Fantasticks. Adapted by its original librettist and lyricist, Tom Jones, the show’s beloved storyline and gloriously romantic score (“Soon It’s Gonna Rain,” “Try to Remember…”) will remain intact. What we find in Jones’s new version is that the young lovers Matt and Louisa have become — Matt and Lewis. Moreover, they aren’t being pushed into each other’s arms by their prankster, gardening fathers, but rather by their prankster, gardening mothers!
First previewed last summer in a limited run at the Flint Rep in Michigan, Jones realized that his story remained -- as the legendary librettist wrote in a note to me -- “a celebration of the magic of the theater, where, combined with the imagination of the audience, we can bring an exciting new world to life. The point of the show,” he confirmed, “is the same. Whether a boy and a girl, or two boys -- falling in love, being hurt, growing up: it is the same." With equally fresh twists on all the characters, our East Coast premiere of Harvey Schmidt & Tom Jones’ The Fantasticks in Provincetown is an event not to be missed.
The Gale: Beware the Siren’s Song
Immersive World Premiere in October
Just in time for Halloween, we’re bringing a brand-new experience to our playhouse with the world premiere of an immersive theatrical journey into Provincetown’s most haunted ship in The Gale: Beware the Siren’s Song.
What the Constitution Means to Me
Cape Cod Premiere in Nov-Dec
Rounding out 2023, concluding this historically significant season, we’re proud to be producing Heidi Schreck’s Pulitzer Prize finalist, What the Constitution Means to Me, in its Cape Cod premiere. For those who loved
The Lady Hamlet and Tiny Beautiful Things, you won’t want to miss What the Constitution Means to Me, which begins performances the week before Thanksgiving.
Drawn from the playwright’s own life-long passion for the majesty and mystery of the U.S. Constitution, Schreck’s story shows how, while still in high school, the author used her intellectual curiosity of our country’s mightiest living document to win college scholarships at competitive Constitutional debates. In the process, Schreck unpacks an unexpected personal-is-political journey that is empowering, haunting, funny, and full of hope.

Heads Up, Actors! Come Audition this Week!
The Fantasticks Seeks Singers, Comics
This Saturday, February 25, from 10am – 3pm, my musical director John Thomas and I will be holding open auditions for The Fantasticks at our playhouse at 238 Bradford Street in Provincetown, MA.
With a sign-up sheet in the theater’s lobby, actors will be seen on a first come/first serve basis. Actors should either prepare a song from The Fantasticks, or in the vocal range of the character they’re auditioning for; bring your own sheet music in your appropriate key. Audition sides from the script will be available on-site, as well as at the Provincetown Theater during business hours this week.
Non-union actors only. BIPOC performers, as well as trans and non-binary performers, are especially encouraged to audition for this production of The Fantasticks. For character breakdowns and more details, click on the link below… so you can (maybe!) get in the show!
