Newburyport, MA – In this season of holidays and giving, the PEG Center for Art & Activism celebrates those in our community who give back.

The PEG Center will host a free community event, "An Evening with Our Local Heroes," at the Newburyport Senior Center to stir the holiday spirit. The public is invited to learn more about opportunities, gather information, talk with volunteers, and enjoy light refreshments. The Women in Action Huddle of Greater Newburyport will also be on hand for their sixth annual holiday gathering.

The tribute to Local Heroes is part of the “Heroes Among Us” art exhibition, curated to spark discussion on issues, expand understanding, and spur positive action.

“Our region is filled with generous people and a wide range of organizations who strive to make life better. When so much of the news is negative, it’s vital to recognize positivity and thank the helpers.” Estey said. “We selected six Local Heroes to highlight: The Jeanne Geiger Crisis Center, Sweet Paws Rescue, The First Parish Newbury Food Pantry, Sophie Korpics of Newburyport Commission on Disabilities, Plogging Newburyport, and the United States Coast Guard Station Merrimack River. Whether it is a safe home for humans and animals, food security, social equity, or taking care of the environment, these activists mirror the PEG Center’s focus on human rights, social justice, and the environment.

In addition, non-profit organizations such as the YWCA of Greater Newburyport, Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense, and Among Friends Meal Program at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Newburyport, and the Women in Action Huddle, will take part in the Senior Center celebration.

“Stop by for the yummy desserts and good will; leave with renewed inspiration and resolutions to make a difference in the new year,” Estey urged.

The “Heroes Among Us” exhibition will be open through Saturday, December 30 at the PEG Center, 3 Harris St. in Newburyport. Visitors are welcome to see the artwork on Tuesdays through Thursdays from noon to 5 p.m., and Fridays through Saturdays from noon to 4 p.m.
