From: Albin Polasek Museum And Sculpture GardensDear Albin Polasek Museum Members and Friends,
We hope this message finds you well. We have exciting updates and events to share with you as we celebrate the anniversary of the Capen House and continue our mission of preserving Albin Polasek's legacy. Here's a look at what's been happening and what's coming up at the museum:
**Capen House Anniversary: A Remarkable Journey**
On October 3rd, we celebrate the anniversary of the Capen House, a journey that showcases the power of preservation and community support. In 2013, the house faced demolition, but thanks to the collective efforts of the Winter Park History Museum, the Friends of Casa Feliz, and the Albin Polasek Museum, Preservation Capen was born. In just four months, we raised $450,000 to save and move the house. The move across Lake Osceola involved the expertise of over 20 professional trades and 100 contractors. The house had to be split into two pieces, and they were affectionately named Fred and Ginger. It's been an incredible journey, and the house reopened its doors in October 2015.
**The Restoration: A Labor of Love**
Our commitment to preserving history didn't stop with the move. From a painstaking (and award-winning) two-year restoration process emerged a truly remarkable Winter Park historical treasure. The Capen House boasts original details like the heart pine floor from the 1880s and the grand staircase from the 1920s. It's a testament to what can be achieved when a community comes together.
Today, Capen stands as a distinguished home for the display of over 15 significant pieces from our renowned art and sculpture collection. Beyond its role as an artistic sanctuary, this historic residence serves as the quintessential venue for a diverse range of occasions, including weddings, art courses, meetings, and community events. As the years pass, the Capen House remains an enduring setting where cherished memories are thoughtfully crafted and celebrated.
Polasek's Legacy: "Eternal Moment"**
Albin Polasek considered his sculptures as "his children." We continue to honor his legacy by preserving these historic grounds. Our curator Tamie and intern Lauren recently cared for "Eternal Moment," one of Polasek's most powerful works. This sculpture captures the passionate moment of newly found love, and it's a true gem in our collection
Origami Workshop Success**
Our recent Origami workshop on September 21st was a resounding success! Over 30 participants learned traditional Origami techniques, thanks to the hard work of Kumiko, Karyn, Yuki, Meg, and Trinity. The event was completely sold out, and we couldn't be happier with the turnout.
