The Dickinson Historical Society is a 501 © (3)
Tax-Exempt Organization, which was incorporated on April 20, 2000. The vision of the Society is to
be an active organization, which promotes community involvement in the
preservation of the history of the NorthGalvestonCounty
area. The mission of the Society is: to raise funds to restore and maintain the
Historic Dickinson Railroad Center and other historical projects; to collect
and exhibit historically significant artifacts and materials; to educate the community
about the history of the Dickinson area through a variety of programs; and to
provide and maintain a visitor and community center.
The HistoricRailroadCenter
(located at 218 FM 517 West and Kellner Road
in Dickinson) is the office of the
Dickinson Historical Society, City of Dickinson Office of Museum & Tourism,
and the North Galveston County Chamber of Commerce. The RailroadCenter also hosts the DickinsonRailroadDepotMuseum
(open November 2007), visitor center, gift shop, and meeting facility for the
community.
Visitors to the RailroadCenter can view the League City
Railroad depot and the Dickinson Railroad depot. The Weed'N Wish Garden Club
originally moved these depots from their respective locations near the railroad
tracks in the late 1960's to their present location off FM 517 West. The Garden
Club restored and cared for the RailroadCenter and Depots for many years
until in 1997 when the Club donated the Center to the City of Dickinson.
As a result of the Garden Club's donation, the City of Dickinson
assisted in forming a committee to preserve and protect the HistoricDickinsonRailroadCenter and in April of 2000 the
committee became the Dickinson Historical Society.
