Op-Ed: Defending Traditional Marriage in Idaho

Government and Politics

January 31, 2025

The Idaho House of Representatives has been steadfast in its efforts to protect the sanctity of traditional marriage, championing the rights of our state in a battle that dates back to the landmark Obergefell v. Hodges decision in 2015. This controversial Supreme Court ruling mandated that all states recognize same-sex marriage, nullifying the will of Idahoans and stripping states of their power to define marriage according to their values. For many conservatives, this decision was a clear overreach of federal authority and a direct affront to state sovereignty.

Idaho has long stood firm on the definition of marriage as a sacred union between one man and one woman. This principle was enshrined in our state constitution through Section 28, adopted by popular vote in 2006. The amendment clearly states, “A marriage between a man and a woman is the only domestic legal union that shall be valid or recognized in this state.” This declaration was not a partisan sentiment but a reflection of the deeply held convictions of Idaho’s citizens.

The Idaho House of Representatives has taken decisive action, calling on the U.S. Supreme Court to reconsider and reverse Obergefell v. Hodges. House Joint Memorial 1 was approved with a 46-24 vote, as 15 Republicans joined the chamber’s nine Democrats in opposing the measure. The resolution will now advance to the Senate State Affairs for further consideration. This bold move underscores our commitment to restoring the natural definition of marriage and reasserting Idaho’s right to self-governance. By defending traditional marriage, we are safeguarding an institution that has endured the test of time and forms the bedrock of our society.

This is more than a legal battle-it is a declaration of our state’s sovereignty and a reminder that decisions impacting the moral fabric of our communities belong at the state level, not in the hands of the federal government. Idaho’s legislature is standing firm, leading the charge to protect the values that resonate so strongly with our citizens.

Marriage, as a union of one man and one woman, deserves protection—not only because of its historical and cultural significance but because of its implications for future generations. Idaho will continue to stand for what is right, ensuring our voice is heard and our values are preserved.
