MADISON, Wis. — Last week, anti-abortion warrior Brad Schimel received a ringing endorsement from Pro-Life Wisconsin, one of Wisconsin’s leading anti-abortion groups that wants to ban all abortions without exception, restrict access to birth control, and only endorses candidates who hold a “no-exceptions pro-life position.”
In their winter newsletter, Pro-Life Wisconsin told supporters that the “easiest road” to enacting a total abortion ban in Wisconsin “will be to elect Brad Schimel to the state supreme court.” Pro-Life Wisconsin’s Legislative Director Matt Sande told Spectrum News he endorsed his anti-abortion ally Brad Schimel to “undo” rulings handed down by the current court and stripping away reproductive freedoms.
“It’s no surprise that Pro-Life Wisconsin sees Brad Schimel as an ally in enforcing their dangerous anti-abortion agenda, after all, Brad Schimel fought for years as attorney general to enforce new restrictions on abortion in Wisconsin, and drew headlines just this week for saying how he would rule on cases involving the 1849 abortion ban,” said Democratic Party of Wisconsin Deputy Communications Director Haley McCoy. “Anti-abortion special interest groups know they have a friend in Brad Schimel.”
Pro-Life Wisconsin is an extreme anti-abortion special interest group that thinks Wisconsin’s draconian 1849 criminal abortion ban that doesn’t ensure exceptions for rape or incest and would throw doctors in jail isn’t restrictive enough. The group wants to take it even further and remove the exception that allows abortions to save a mother’s life from Wisconsin law, calling such exceptions “unnecessary.” They only endorse candidates for office with a “100 percent pro-life” position, meaning candidates must agree that “there may never be legal exceptions” that permit abortion care in order to earn their support. Pro-life Wisconsin’s position is so extreme that it would prohibit access to certain forms of contraception, and the group opposes IVF treatment.
