Michigan Dems highlight Hall’s own troubled past with the police and opposition to criminal justice legislation after his newly declared support for law enforcement
LANSING -- Earlier on Jan 22nd, Speaker of the House Matt Hall outlined his supposed plans to support criminal justice in Michigan - yet he conveniently forgot to mention his concerning past with domestic violence and history of opposing bills to support law enforcement.
Let’s set the record straight on Hall’s votes when it comes to supporting police officers:
- Hall voted against the state budget that included $416 million to fix the roads, $1.2 million for veterans, and $171.5 million to fund local public police and public safety departments.
- Hall voted against repealing Right-to-Work for public sector workers, a move to protect Michigan’s police unions.
- Hall voted against Extreme Risk Protection Orders and universal background checks on gun sales that help keep our officers safe.
- Hall voted for a scheme to allow risky investments in state employees’ – including law enforcement workers’ – retirement plans.
- Hall has minimized the violence against police on January 6th.
“At the end of the day, Matt Hall cannot be trusted to stand up for law enforcement and crime victims, no matter what he says,” said Michigan Democratic Party Spokesperson Tommy Kubitschek. “Time and time again, he has voted against measures to keep officers and Michiganders safe from gun violence and abuse, putting partisan politics ahead of supporting solutions for law enforcement and our communities.
“Every day, our law enforcement officers put their lives on the line to keep our communities safe, and Matt Hall cannot be trusted to stand by them. These heroes deserve better, and Michigan Democrats are committed to fighting to make sure they get the support they need to do their jobs.”
