Meals on Wheels America News: Knowing Someone Doesn’t Have A Meal Breaks My Heart

Clubs and Organizations

April 25, 2025

You have the power to help homebound seniors feel seen, remembered and loved in honor of National Volunteer Month — and beyond.

Every week, Meals on Wheels volunteer Sonya delivers more than just a nutritious meal. Her visits bring a warm hug, a friendly conversation and a reminder that someone cares.

Sonya began volunteering because she knows the impact that a nutritious meal and friendly hello can have. And that’s how she met 98-year-old client Miss Mary. Over time, the two of them built a friendship that was meant to be. Now, Miss Mary waits by the door for their chats, their laughter and the comfort of knowing she’s not alone.

Your support helps make this connection — and millions more like it — possible. When you give today, you empower the Meals on Wheels network to reach more seniors. And right now, the need is growing rapidly in communities across the country.

With 56% of older adults experiencing loneliness and nearly 13 million facing food insecurity, the demand for support is growing more urgent. Thankfully, you can make a difference. Every donation you make helps End the Wait™ for seniors still hoping for a knock on the door so that every senior who needs Meals on Wheels gets it.

"Whether you're young or old, Black or White, rich or poor, people are people, and people are hurting -- whether it's visible or not, people are hurting, and people have needs." – Sonya.

Together, we can make sure no senior is left behind.
