From: Jane Addams Hull-House MuseumThe next two months are packed with programming here at Hull-House. I love when people fill our home. This newsletter will share some highlights from our recent events, but first…Here's a rundown of three programs I’m most excited for in April during our theatre festival, Act Well Your Part.
April 18th we’ll have a visit from our friends at D-Composed, who will combine their sounds with the work of Ericka Ratcliff for D-Compressed. I first saw D-Composed at Kenwood Gardens a few summers back. Laying out in the warm sun and listening to their fresh sounds was truly an experience. All these seasons later, it’s so nice to work with them here at Hull-House. Even better, our Hull-House intern from UIC’s History department, Ximena Ramirez has been digging in archives across the city–her findings, alongside Ericka’s oral histories and research, will be on display at this program! It’s going to be incredible.
April 25th we’ll be joined by artist Silvia Ines Gonzalez who will lead a workshop, Books and Banners of the People. This program is in partnership with Court Theatre and their production of Berlin (Charles Newell, 2025). The hands-on bookmaking workshop will provide space to dive deep into the play’s themes of resistance; how knowledge is cultivated and spread in our communities, now and in the future; and Hull-House practices of participatory artmaking. Silvia invited me recently to her studio at the Chicago Art Department. She picked me up at Hull-House. Driving up Halsted, we chatted about her arts background, the many projects she’s working on and the specialness of being a native Chicagoan. At her studio, I got lost in her collages and books! Not to mention her radio show. She’s just brilliant.
We’ll close out our programming on May 7th with Act Well Your Part, Designing Hull-House Theatre, a conversation with Hour Studio, who have worked on so many beautiful projects at Hull-House the past two years. They designed our exhibition Radical Craft and its accompanying catalogue. They gave Hull-House Books its identity and designed the green tote bag I hope you’ve been seeing around town. They designed Act Well Your Part, which will include Hull-House wearables that I can’t wait for you to see. We’re their No. 1 fans and we’re excited to chat with them about what it means to design a fresh identity for a museum with a history as rich and complex as ours. They’re hilarious and creative, and you really should come check it out.
All of that to say: Come visit! We have even more programs than these. We’ll be waiting for you!
See you soon,
