DES MOINES – On Jan 22nd, as we should be celebrating the 52nd Anniversary of Roe v. Wade, we are once again reminded of the lengths Republicans have gone to abolish the law in order to give themselves control over women’s bodies.

While Supreme Court Justices handpicked by Trump during his last administration overthrew Roe v. Wade at the national level, Kim Reynolds and Iowa Republicans led the charge on enacting one of the nation’s strictest abortion bans here in Iowa. That six-week ban went into effect in July of 2024.

A massive swath of the country has now passed restrictions on abortion and women’s reproductive health, forcing women to seek medically necessary care hundreds of miles away, or simply go without.

“On Jan 22nd, we should be celebrating the 52nd anniversary of Roe v. Wade and the privacy and medical rights it gave to women across the nation. Instead, we’re once again forced to fight for women’s rights. Iowa Democrats will continue the quest to restore these rights for as long as it takes,” said IDP Chair Rita Hart. “Every woman hurt by Iowa’s restrictive abortion laws and lack of maternal health care options has a name and a story that Republicans are silencing.”
