ICYMI: 'Why Did the President Fire You, Mommy?' - Trump Fires Hundreds of Federal Employees in Michigan

Government and Politics

February 20, 2025

In Trump’s own “Valentine’s Day Massacre”, he has left hundreds unemployed while endangering our lakes and forests

LANSING — In case you missed it, Trump fired hundreds of federal employees here in Michigan — putting working families at risk. As of yet, the exact number of federal employees in Michigan is unknown, but one thing is absolutely certain: Trump doesn’t care about Michiganders.

These jobs aren’t political appointments or unnecessary waste, these are veterans’ jobs in Ann Arbor, jobs protecting Michigan’s beloved natural resources, firefighters working to stop wildfires, and much more. Trump’s decision was reckless and cruel, and it jeopardizes the well-being of families across the state — all to further his own dangerous agenda.

Trump has shown yet again where his priorities lie, and it will never be with working Michiganders and their families. Michigan Democrats at every level are pushing back against Trump’s agenda and the devastating impacts it has on our state.

MLive: Trump jobs purge hits Michigan. ‘Why did the president fire you, Mommy?’

  • Amanda Mae Downey has found it difficult to fully explain to her 8-year-old daughter why she lost her job with the U.S. Forest Service this weekend. But the girl does understand who gave the order.

  • “’Why did the president fire you, Mommy?’” she asked…

  • She was among dozens, potentially hundreds, of federal workers in Michigan across multiple agencies fired in what union leaders are calling an illegal nationwide termination of civil servants who were notified that their firing was performance-based despite many having recent positive reviews.

  • “None of these people who got fired did anything wrong,” Vanderheuel said. “We have people all across the country who were just given superior performance awards as early as this fall and then get fired for performance…”

  • Vanderheuel described the purge as being unlike any government employee ranks culling he’s ever seen before. Cuts under past presidents were surgical, planned and noticed in advance.

  • “It wasn’t just like, ‘let’s create chaos and fire people over the weekend,‘” he said…

  • More than 1,000 probationary employees were fired from the Department of Veteran Affairs, including U.S. Army veterans in Ann Arbor who worked there for years but were considered probationary because they had recently been promoted…

  • The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency fired about 400 employees, including dozens in Michigan who work for Region 5, which oversees Midwest states that border the Great Lakes, according to outraged Democrats in Congress.

  • “Their job is to ensure the air we breathe is clean, the water we drink is safe, the ground our children play on won’t give them cancer,” said U.S. Rep. Debbie Dingell, D-Ann Arbor…

  • “Even though our letter says based on performance, you’ll notice it doesn’t say based on ‘poor’ performance,” she said. “It’s a play on words.”

  • “I’ve been through some s—t and it’s just so frustrating that no matter how hard I work, I keep getting knocked down,” she said. “When is the hard-working American really going to get what they deserve?”
