Join us for an enchanting evening as we celebrate the extraordinary talent of Saundra “Renee” Smith, the Gullah Celebration’s Featured Artist, at an inspiring gallery reception. As the owner of Gullah Art By Renee, LLC, Saundra “Renee” Smith has captured the essence of the Gullah culture, bringing to life the vibrant hues and rich history of a people who have thrived in isolation along the southeastern coast of the United States. Her work, recognized in Betty-Carol Sellen's "Guide to American Artist: Self-Taught, Outsider and Folk Art," is a testament to her unique vision and dedication to preserving Gullah heritage.
A proud member of the National Association of Women Artists since 2018, Saundra's art is also on permanent exhibit at the Gullah Geechee Garden entrance at Brook Green Gardens in Myrtle Beach, SC. Her pieces, created with acrylic and oil on canvas, wood, tin, or glass, offer a spiritual and transformative glimpse into the daily lives of the Gullah people. Through her vibrant depictions of baskets, flowers, water, sky, and the colorful attire of Gullah women and families, she captures the essence of "de luk pon we island."

Established in 1862 with an initial membership of approximately 120 individuals, this iconic congregation stands as the oldest church on Hilton Head Island. Led by the remarkable Pastor Abraham Murchison, a literate former slave from Savannah and a respected leader in Mitchelville - the first self-governed freedman's town in America. Join us and bring your loved ones for an unforgettable journey through time and spirituality.

Voices of Gullah will be held at the Arts Center, in the theater, for a celebration of this beautiful culture with an emphasis on the lyrical language of Gullah through song and storytelling. In addition to entertainment, we will showcase arts, hands-on crafts, and delicious food, all with an exciting Gullah flair.
Inside the Walter Greer Gallery, browse the Art League of Hilton Head’s annual exhibit and sale of De Aarts Ob We People, one of the largest displays of original work by emerging and acclaimed artists representing the life of Gullah people our area.
All ages are welcome to join the free and uniquely-Lowcountry festivities.
