From: Delaware Governor John CarneyWILMINGTON - On January 20, 2025, Governor-elect Matt Meyer announced the nomination of Brigadier General James Benson as the new Adjutant General of the Delaware National Guard. The nomination follows a thorough review process and is a key step in ensuring the continued safety, security, and readiness of Delaware’s military and emergency response capabilities.
“Brigadier General James Benson has demonstrated exceptional leadership, integrity, and a deep commitment to the well-being of our troops,” said Governor-elect Matt Meyer. “Throughout his distinguished military career, he has consistently put service to our state and country first, leading with a dedication to excellence. His leadership will be vital as we continue to support the men and women of the Delaware National Guard in their crucial roles both at home and abroad.”
Brigadier General Benson brings decades of experience serving in the Delaware National Guard and a wealth of knowledge in strategic military operations, national defense, and community engagement. Most recently, he assumed the responsibilities of Assistant Adjutant General of the Delaware Army National Guard. As a senior leader, he has overseen large-scale operations, including disaster response and humanitarian missions, while maintaining the highest standards of professionalism and service.
The Adjutant General serves as the principal military advisor to the Governor and commands the Delaware National Guard, which plays a critical role in supporting state and federal emergency response operations, including disaster relief, search and rescue efforts, and providing support during times of civil unrest. If confirmed by the Senate, General Benson will assume command as the Adjutant General and will lead the Delaware National Guard in its continued commitment to safeguarding Delaware’s residents and contributing to the national defense.

Outgoing Major General Michael R. Berry’s distinguished career as the head of the Delaware National Guard has been marked by exceptional leadership, dedication, and service to both the state and the nation. As he retires, Delaware recognizes his unwavering commitment to the men and women of the Guard and his significant contributions to the security and resilience of the community. His leadership has been instrumental in ensuring the readiness of the Guard, and his legacy will continue to inspire future generations of service members.
Biography
Brigadier General James Benson, Nominee, Adjutant General, Delaware National Guard
Brigadier General (BG) James A. Benson assumed duties as the Assistant Adjutant General of the Army, Delaware National Guard, on June 3, 2023. As the Assistant Adjutant General, BG Benson ensured that all assigned units and personnel were fully trained, deployable, and equipped for mobilization to support overseas contingency operations and homeland defense missions in support of the Nation and State of Delaware. BG Benson previously served as the Director of the Joint Staff, Delaware National Guard from January 2021 to April 2023. BG Benson was commissioned in 1991, through the Delaware National Guard Officer Candidate School. He commanded the 259th (Tropo) Signal Company, 198th Expeditionary Signal Battalion, and the 261st Theater Tactical Signal Brigade. BG Benson was deployed in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation Enduring Freedom. BG Benson is a graduate of the University of Delaware, with Bachelor’s degree in Economics; Wilmington University with a Masters in Business Administration; and the Army War College, with a Masters in Strategic Studies. In his civilian capacity, BG Benson is also an Emergency Management Consultant with the United States Department of Agriculture.
