From: Florida Governor Ron DeSantisCOLUMBUS, Ohio - On May 13 2025, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis was invited by the U.S. Term Limits organization to travel and meet with legislative members of the Ohio House of Representatives and Ohio Senate to encourage the passage of a resolution calling for term limits on members of Congress. Florida passed House Concurrent Resolution (HCR) 693 calling for a U.S. Term Limits convention under the tenure of Speaker Paul Renner during the 2024 Legislative Session. Florida is also among a group of twelve states that have passed resolutions through both chambers of its state legislature to make such an application for a convention.
“D.C. will never fix itself,” said Governor Ron DeSantis. “Term limits will change the incentives for members of Congress from focusing on reelection to focusing on tangible accomplishments.”
The U.S. Constitution provides state legislatures with the authority to propose amendments without the approval of Congress. To call the U.S. Term Limits Convention, it would require two-thirds of the 50 states to pass similar resolutions. Currently, Florida, Alabama, Indiana, Louisiana, Missouri, North Carolina, Oklahoma, South Carolina, South Dakota, Tennessee, West Virginia and Wisconsin have passed resolutions calling for a U.S. Term Limits Convention, though other states have such a resolution passed in a single chamber or before their legislative bodies for a vote. A live map of states that have passed term limit resolutions or are in the process of doing so can be found at this link.
The Governor’s efforts to work with other states to call for U.S. term limits is an important function of the role of states in demanding accountability from Washington, D.C. Today’s advocacy builds upon his longstanding record of calling for much-needed constitutional reforms.
