Promotes income tax, property tax relief for Montanans

BOZEMAN, MT – Governor Greg Gianforte on Jan 29th, promoted the importance of delivering income tax and property tax relief during a visit to a small business in Bozeman.

“As I meet with Montanans in every corner of our state, I hear loud and clear: tax relief is a priority,” Gov. Gianforte said. “That’s why we’ve proposed to cut taxes again this session, to once again deliver the largest tax cut in state history. Our tax cuts will let Montanans keep more of what they earn, help folks navigate the nationwide affordability crisis, and create a more prosperous future for our state and people.”

In November, the governor unveiled his Path to Security and Prosperity, a historic, pro-jobs, pro-family budget for the State of Montana for the next biennium. In it, the governor proposed lowering the income tax rate for hardworking Montanans at every income level and providing property tax relief for Montana homeowners for their primary residence and small businesses through a homestead rate cut.

The homestead rate tax cut, recommended by the governor’s diverse, bipartisan Property Tax Task Force, is projected to lower property taxes for Montana homeowners by 15% and small businesses by 18%. According to estimates, it will directly reduce property taxes for more than 215,000 primary residences, more than 32,000 small businesses, and provide indirect relief for over 130,000 renters.

During a visit to TACTIC, a Montana small business that serves as a tactical and security training hub for civilians, law enforcement agencies, and private security groups, the governor heard from owners Chris and Kate Forrest on the impacts of his proposals.

“I pay the bills for our business. We are very grateful for the proposed tax relief, we work hard and it means a lot to us, to what we are doing, and the legacy we want to leave,” said Kate Forrest.

The governor concluded, “Businesses like TACTIC not only make Montanans stronger but also strengthen our state and economy. To support them, we’ll remain dedicated to cutting income and property taxes so they can keep more of what they work hard to earn.”

Understanding the importance of helping Montanans navigate the nationwide affordability crisis this year, the governor concluded by urging passage of income tax and property tax relief as quickly as possible.
