With the OMB freezing all federal grants and loans, the millions of Michiganders who rely on food assistance, student loans, or community grants will be left in the lurch
LANSING — Late last night, the Office of Management and Budget (OMB) released a memo that froze all federal grants and loans — jeopardizing millions of Michiganders and their families. Yesterday, Trump and House Republicans lounged at a golf retreat in Florida, but working families across the country are wondering whether they will be able to pay rent – and if police officers, teachers, first responders, crisis workers, and more aren’t getting paid.
“It cannot be overstated how devastating this funding freeze is going to be for middle-class Michiganders and Americans,” said Chair of the Michigan Democratic Party Lavora Barnes. “Students, families in the hospital, survivors of domestic violence, Michigan veterans, doctors conducting lifesaving research, and countless more are stuck in limbo as Trump holds their funding hostage.
“When Trump’s administration is led by billionaires like Elon Musk, it is no surprise that they don’t bat an eye at threatening critical programs that millions rely on every single day. This is yet another clear sign that Trump simply does not care about us — he will only ever work to help himself and his billionaire buddies. It’s despicable, and Michigan Dems will do everything we can to protect our communities from his destruction.”
Since 2021, federal grants have provided the state of Michigan with:
A total of $140.6 billion in federal funding.
$13.46 billion in education funding.
$38 million in grants to state and law enforcement in Michigan.
$3.05 million for sex offender monitoring.
$68.3 million to address violence against women, including funding for law enforcement and local charity organizations aiding victims of domestic abuse.
$572.6 million in VA funding to support our vets, including funding for our seniors at the Michigan Veterans Home.
$272.9 million in State Opioid Response grants to help address Michigan’s opioid crisis.
$3.5 billion in Head Start funding for early childhood education.
$13.7 billion in Federal Highway Administration funding that’s helping to Fix the Damn Roads.
$3.97 billion for U of M and $1.64 billion for MSU.
This crucial funding is now in limbo – putting our entire state at risk.
