February 17, 2025

D1 Training, a leading fitness concept utilizing the five core tenets of athletic-based training, opened a new location in St. Petersburg at 7141 22nd Ave N. on Nov. 11. The group fitness facility employs a sports-science backed training regimen led by certified coaches to help people of all ages achieve their sport and fitness goals.

The new D1 Training facility is owned by husband-and-wife duo Randy Malesick and Dr. Caitlin Demarest. After completing his undergraduate degree in Biology and Exercise Science, Malesick went on to study law with a focus in sports law in the state of Florida. Following his graduation in 2007, Malesick knew he wanted to utilize his education to open a fitness concept. After several years of researching and visiting fitness concepts, Malesick and Dr. Demarest found a home for themselves and their children at D1 Training. In the growing area of St. Petersburg, Malesick and Dr. Demarest know that D1 Training will be a great fit for families in the community.

“After reflecting on my athletic and training career growing up, I realized that children need quality coaches that help instill confidence in their players,” said Malesick. “What I love most about D1 Training is its commitment to helping young athletes advance in their athletic careers, whether that be going on to play at a collegiate level or pursuing NIL opportunities. D1 Training St. Petersburg, along with its amazing coaches, will always be an athlete’s greatest motivator and supporter.”

D1 Training St. Petersburg will be managed by experienced coach Jon Hodgman. With extensive coaching experience, Hodgman first began his career with D1 Training as a coach at the West Nashville location in 2021. As a Florida native, when he found out Malesick and Dr. Demarest were bringing D1 Training to St. Petersburg, he knew this was the optimal opportunity to return to his home state.

“As a coach, there is no better feeling than seeing the improvement in coordination, agility and strength in an athlete, no matter their age,” said Hodgman. “Everyday at D1 Training is a day of watching someone grow, fall in love with fitness and become more confident in themselves. That, to me, is why I love what I do; it’s witnessing a transformation, not just physically, but mentally and emotionally.”

D1 Training offers four age-based programs including Rookie (ages 7-11), Developmental (ages 12-14), Prep (ages 15-18) and D1 Adult. Each fitness program is based on the five athletic-based tenets: dynamic warm-up, performance, strength program, core and conditioning, and cool down. Outside of group workouts, D1 Training offers one-on-one training with world-class coaches. The goal is simple: to continue to train athletes who are dedicated to their sport or their fitness goals, regardless of age or athletic background.

“Malesick and Dr. Demarest are the ideal candidates to bring the D1 Training experience to St. Petersburg,” said the brand’s Chief Operating Officer, Dan Murphy. “We’re thrilled to welcome them to the D1 family and are confident in their ability to show the St. Petersburg area what they’ve been missing out on. D1 is a one-of-a-kind fitness experience that’s built around the individual and meant to help people meet their athletic goals. Our strong network of franchisees embodies our core values to bring the D1 Training vision to life, and we know Malesick and Dr. Demarest will do just that in St. Petersburg and its surrounding communities.”

Strategically expanding across the nation through franchising, D1 Training has more than 100 performance centers open with over 100 additional locations in various stages of development. The brand is currently seeking qualified and active community members to expand its footprint and help more people meet their fitness goals.
