Charleston, SC - In tandem with a debut at the North Charleston Arts Fest at the Navy Chapel May 4, the Colour of Music Festival will return to I’On Village in Mount Pleasant SC at I’On Village Chapel, Friday, May 5, 2023, at 7:30 p.m. for a special performance showcasing leading Black classical artists.

German-born violinist Anyango Yarbo-Davenport and French violinist Romuald Grimbert-Barré are featured as part of an evening of quartets and sextet chamber ensembles in I’On’s picturesque village community east of the Cooper.

The performance will feature a quintet premiere by North Charleston-born composer Edmund Thornton Jenkins, the father of Black classical music for the low country. The quintet composition was arranged by Jenkins’ great-nephew, Tuffus Zimbabwe, keyboardist for Saturday Night Live, and include his Reverie Fantasy. The evening will also feature Peter Ilyich Tchaikovsky’s String Sextet in D minor "Souvenir de Florence," Op. 70 and Antonín Dvo?ák’s American String Quartet.

Since 2013, the Colour of Music Festival offers a musical kaleidoscope highlighting the impact and historical significance of Black classical composers and performers on American and world culture. The Colour of Music Festival began with performances at various venues throughout historic Charleston and has grown to debut in Atlanta, Columbia, SC, Houston, Pittsburgh, New York City, Washington DC, Richmond, Nashville, Sacramento, and Tulsa.

I am elated to produce what I hope will be many more events in partnership with the I’ON Trust whose mission brings the I’ON Village and surrounding communities together through music, ”said Lee Pringle, Founder and Artistic Director, Colour of Music Festival and community resident.
