Chair Conrad Statement on Anniversary of Roe v. Wade

Government and Politics

January 22, 2025

Seattle, WA – On the 52nd anniversary of the Supreme Court’s decision on Roe v. Wade, Washington State Democratic Party Chair Shasti Conrad released the following statement on the lifesaving ruling now overturned by Donald Trump’s radical Supreme Court – paving the way for extreme abortion bans across the country:

“On the anniversary of Roe v. Wade, Washington Democrats renew our commitment to protect the fundamental right of all women to make their own health care decisions. Because of Donald Trump, women today have fewer rights than their mothers and grandmothers had. Donald Trump is responsible for this assault on personal freedom as well as the suffering unleashed by extreme abortion bans across this nation. As Trump enters office, he and his allies intend to double down on their reproductive health care attacks – threatening to enact a nationwide abortion ban, restrict access to contraception and IVF, and surveil women’s pregnancies. Washington women deserve so much better than Trump’s dangerous anti-freedom agenda. Washington Democrats will fight for their rights.”

Trump and his Project 2025 allies are hellbent on banning abortion nationwide and are threatening IVF and contraception access.

- Trump owns every single abortion ban in the country and his Project 2025 agenda includes a national abortion ban.

- Trump’s Project 2025 agenda includes plans to revoke access to medication abortion by using the Comstock Act to ban the shipment of the medication by mail.

- Trump’s agenda promises to force states to surveil and report on women’s miscarriages and abortions.

- After opening the door to attacks on IVF by overturning Roe, Trump has failed to rule out signing legislation that would threaten access to the procedure while his Project 2025 allies scheme to “re-run the Roe playbook” on IVF access.

- On Trump’s first day in office, the government website offering reproductive health information was taken offline.

The overturning of Roe has created a health crisis in the United States.

- Because of Trump, women in 19 states are living under an extreme abortion ban.

- Maternal health care deserts have expanded since the Supreme Court’s decision to overturn Roe.

- Nationwide, restrictive abortion bans are linked to higher rates of maternal and infant mortality, particularly for women of color.
