U.S. Representative Buddy Carter (GA-01) this week enthusiastically supported Donald Trump’s tariffs – which effectively raises taxes – even as the Ports of Savannah and Brunswick in his district “brace for slowdown” due to the tariffs.

“Welcome to the Golden Age of American production,” said Carter of the tariffs, despite the fact that his district’s economy is powered by the Georgia Ports Authority, which supports more than 80,000 jobs in Coastal Georgia and generates $171 billion in statewide economic impact by importing and exporting foreign goods. Local leaders and businesses have already expressed concern that the shipping industry could be hit hard by Trump’s tariffs.

“Buddy Carter celebrating Trump recklessly raising taxes as his district braces for the devastating impact on Coastal Georgia’s economy shows how out of touch he is,” said Alex Yerkey, DPG spokesperson. “Donald Trump throwing jobs into limbo and wreaking economic havoc might be a ‘Golden Age’ according to Buddy Carter, but not according to families in his district.”

Buddy Carter has made a habit of enabling the Trump administration’s dangerous policies that are hurting Georgians. Carter was silent as Trump and Musk threatened to close a Social Security office in his district, voted for Trump’s plan to potentially cut Medicaid, and supported his unhinged plan to acquire Greenland by introducing a bill to rename the country “Red, White and Blueland.”
