“Fernandes is beyond categorization,” wrote the Post and Courier of her American debut. “She is herself, and I’ll always be interested in any music she cares to explore.”
To her compositions and interpretations, Heloísa Fernandes brings Brazilian drive, a curious mind, and a woman’s grace. Strong and original, ancient and modern, her creations blossom with rhythmic vitality and melodic delicacy and, using her skill as an improviser, she plumbs their emotional depths.
At the time of this publication, Brazilian pianist and composer Heloísa Fernandes is at her keyboard, pen in hand, listening to months of recordings of her improvisations, culling ideas to shape into new compositions. A work she composed for the 2023 Amazonas Green Jazz Festival in Manaus, the capital of the Amazon, entitled Oferenda ao Rio Amazonas (Offering to the Amazon River) has arisen from her unconscious mind often enough to become a guiding theme, pointing her toward her interest in the biodiversity of Brazil.
These new works will receive their premiere at the House and will be recorded for Heloísa’s next album in the days that follow.
