On the occasion of Sherrie Levine: 1977–1988, please join us for a screening of Douglas Sirk’s classic final film, Imitation of Life, on the rooftop of the Museum, presented in collaboration with Aspen Film.
Sirk, whose films are renowned as the greatest cinematic examples of melodrama, was an important early and enduring interest for Levine. This 1959 masterpiece starring Lana Turner and Juanita Moore tells the story of two single mothers who raise their children together under the one roof following a chance encounter on a Coney Island beach. Ultimately, the film ultimately is a socially conscious critique, questioning entrenched hierarchies of race, class, and gender.
Guests will be invited to make their own ice cream sundaes at a sundae bar stationed on the roof terrace.
