Walk through the exhibition Draw Them In, Paint Them Out: Trenton Doyle Hancock Confronts Philip Guston with contemporary artist and educator Mark Thomas Gibson as he shares his reflections on painting, comics, and satirical humor in art.

About the Artist: 

Mark Thomas Gibson's (b. 1980, Miami, FL) personal lens on American culture stems from his multipartite viewpoint as an artist, a professor, and an American history buff. These myriad and often colliding perspectives fuel his exploration of contemporary culture through the language of painting and drawing, revealing a vision of America where every viewer is implicated as a potential character within the story.

Gibson co-curated the 2016 traveling exhibition Black Pulp! with William Villalongo at 32 Edgewood Gallery, Yale School of Art, authored the books Some Monsters Loom Large and Early Retirement, and has been the recipient of the Elizabeth Murray Artist Residency, a Fellowship from the Pew Center for Arts and Heritage, and a Guggenheim Fellowship from the Guggenheim Memorial Foundation.

His work has been shown at a range of institutions, from the solo exhibitions Whirlygig! at Sikkema Malloy Jenkins and A Retelling at MOCAD in Detroit, MI, to the group show Rising Sun: Artists in an Uncertain America at the African American Museum in Philadelphia.

Gibson is currently an Associate Professor and Program Head of Painting at Tyler School of Art and Architecture, Temple University and lives and works in Philadelphia, PA.
