Description:
September 1965, the Woodridge Women's Club established a Volunteer Library in the lower level of the Village Hall. A successful referendum in April 1967 (137 Yes, 73 No) provided a tax base for the budding library.
In July 1969, the library was moved to 2916 Forest Glen Parkway and remained there until May 1972 when it was moved to 2815 West 75th Street.
In April 1977, the voters again approved a referendum (1590 Yes, 1545 No) to sell bonds for a new building.
The new building was dedicated on October 7, 1979. Over the next 15 years, the library experienced many changes. Library hours increased from 60 to 72 per week and included Friday evening and Sunday hours. The collection grew to 100,000 volumes. Circulation increased from 100,000 to 400,000 per year. Videocassettes, Books on Cassette, and CDs were added. Seating for library users diminished as more shelving was needed for the burgeoning collections.
Cognizant of the need for additional space, the Board of Trustees contracted with the library building consultant, Anders Dahlgren who worked with board, staff, and administration to develop a building program statement. Completed in Fall of 1992, the Building Program Statement recommended 51,000 sq. ft. which would house the projected collection of 175,000 books and serve a projected jurisdictional population of 39,000.
Through referendum, the voters approved 5.7 million in bonds for expansion and renovation. The project was completed in September 1997. The grand opening was held on September 21, 1997.
