Temple B’nai Israel (Clearwater) to Host Community Health Fair Temple B’nai Israel, Clearwater, will host the “Ounce of Prevention” Health Fair on Sunday, Jan. 9, 2011. “The goal of the health fair is to provide an all-encompassing health and wellness fair. This event will increase awareness of all forms of healthcare and healthy living opportunities that are available in our community” said Amy Smyler McFarland. More than 30 exhibitors are expected to participate in the health fair. There will also be free health screenings including, but not limited to, blood pressure, blood sugar, eyes, ears, spine scan, and skin cancer. The Victor Centers for Jewish Genetic Diseases located at The University of Miami Miller School of Medicine in Miami, FL will be at the health fair providing information about testing for nine different genetic diseases with a higher incidence among people of Eastern European and Ashkenazi Jewish descent. “We encourage those Jewish couples who might be at risk for carrying the gene(s) that lead to these diseases and who are considering starting a family to come to the health fair to learn about the testing program”, said Debbie Wasserman of the Victor Centers. The health fair will also feature speakers, panel discussions and demonstrations and door prizes. Fair is open to the public and admission is free. Hours are 11am -3pm. ##
