Description:
The Lancaster Civil War Round Table invites you to be part of an exciting evening on Thursday, September 20, 2012, when we welcome Scott Hartwig who will present a program, entitled "The Antietam Campaign: Politics and Strategy that Shaped the Antietam Campaign." Social, political, economic and racial issues decisively shaped the Civil War. By the summer of 1862, the war had been going on for more than a year. President Lincoln was losing the support of both politicians and the public. He needed a major victory. Listen as author and lecturer, D. Scott Hartwig, dissects the Maryland Campaign to show how politics and strategy would be a major factor in the campaign. Scott is a veteran of the National Park Service and serves as Gettysburg National Military Park's supervisory historian where he has worked since 1980. He won the regional Freeman Tilden Award for excellence in interpretation in 1993 and has been fundamental in the growth of Gettysburg's on-site interpretation and living history programming, distance and satellite education efforts, and a key player for the design of all aspects of the new Gettysburg museum/visitor center which opened in 2008. He has written numerous articles, essays and books on Civil War subjects. His most recent book is "To Antietam Creek: The Maryland Campaign of September 1862," published in 2012 by The Johns Hopkins University Press. He has appeared on the History Channel, Discovery Channel and Pennsylvania Cable Network. The Lancaster Civil War Round Table will meet at the Lititz Public Library located at 651 Kissel Hill Road at 7:00 p.m. These programs are free and open to the public. For more information, call Micky by Wednesday, September 19, at 392-4976.
