Description:
History

In 1920, the industrialist August Heckscher built a small beaux-arts museum in the midst of Heckscher Park to house his eclectic private collection ranging from Egyptian artifacts to 19th-century paintings glorifying the beauty of New York's Hudson River Valley.

Today, the Heckscher Museum of Art - described by the New York Times as "one of the primary small museums in the country with an international reputation" - has grown far beyond its origins.

The Heckscher provides not only an ambitious schedule of special and traveling exhibitions, but offers the public its own distinguished collection of more than 1,800 paintings, sculpture and works on paper spanning about 500 years of European and American art, from Renaissance masters to the most recent contemporary artists. Particularly noted for its 19th and early 20th-century landscape collection especially the Hudson River and Long Island landscape schools - the Heckscher is also becoming known as a center for important studies in early modernism.
