Yolo Frontloaders fosters the safe use of muzzle loading firearms.  The club holds monthly shoots which occur every third Sunday at the Yolo Sportsmans Association specialty range. Shooting commences at 9:00 am. Targets are mixture of metallic silhouettes, paper targets or clay birds. Shooting distances range between 40 and 45 yards.

All forms of muzzle loading firearms are welcome at the monthly shoots, most members commonly shoot firearms with cap or flintlock ignitions. The majority of the firearms that are used during our shoots are replicas of original pieces dating from the early 1700's to the fur trapper era of the 1830's. In-line muzzle loading rifles that use belted conical bullets are not encouraged. Shooters must use only open iron sights. Optically enhanced gun sights are prohibited. A group of Trade Gun enthusiasts also enjoy a monthly Trap shoot with flintlock smoothbores.

The Frontloaders also conducts an annual competitive shooting event. In addition to the competition, the two-day event also includes a raffle, club dinner potluck and a silent auction.

On alternate years, the club also presents a day-long black powder seminar that provides information for proper handling. operation, safety, marksmanship and problem solving with black powder firearms. Lunch is provided.

At the monthly shoots there are always members available to provide help to visitors who have had that gun around but really aren't sure how to use it.
