A Standard of Excellence
From its very beginning, the Wooster Country Club has been the source of many memories that have not only created an abundant history for the club, but has also provided it with the patina of a premier institution within the Wooster community.
It was in the fall of 1903, that several local business and professional men, who wanted to expand their recreational and social horizons, met in the back room of a downtown merchant tailor shop to discuss the possibility of developing a facility that would enable them to enjoy the ancient and honorable game of golf.
If a consultant had been asked about the probability for success, the advice probably would have been negative. The city's population was only about 6,000 and its economy was still driven by a five-and-a-half to six day a week work mindset. The game would probably have been played no more than six months out of the year and Wooster was not in Scotland.
Nevertheless, the enthusiasm of those who attended the meeting was hearty. The following spring, fourteen partners leased 33 acres of land for a golf course. They then cleared the land and mowed it (with a hay mower) to provide an acceptable pattern of tees, fairways and greens. Their development was called "The Country Club of Golf Links".
History would later show that while the local population growth and its economy were relatively stable, the fortunes of the club would be continually buffeted, bolstered and boosted by the flow of the national socio-economic happenings.
Over one hundred and ten years later, the Wooster Country Club flourishes with 250 plus members. Two of the most remarkable features of the Wooster Country Club's long past have been its ability to recover from critical situations that threatened its very existence and also to handle growth opportunities as they occurred.
This unusual capacity over the years has been provided by loyal members and friends. These members and friends without trepidation at the time for decision, applied their own talents, time and/or substance to each situation for the benefit of all.
It must always be acknowledged that all who enjoy the club's facilities today owe a debt of gratitude and an expression of appreciation to those special benefactors, who over the years, have made Wooster Country Club's outstanding contribution to the community possible.
