When Barbara was 20, she worked in the jewelry department at the Lloyd Center Meier & Frank, in Portland. During that they had a Sporting Goods Dept. at that time and sold firearms. On a lunch break she checked it out, ended up buying an Anschutz .22, jacket, glove, etc. Realizing she had no were to shoot her new gun, she heard about a gravel pit where some shot, checked it out and decided that was not the place to go. Shortly after that experience, she joined Portland Rifle and Pistol Club where she starting shooting competitively in Smallbore, Pistol, later in Air Rifle, Trap, and Highpower.
