Our mission is still the same: To increase understanding and appreciation of community theatre and to bring quality theatre, at affordable prices, to Renton and the surrounding areas.
History:
Community Theatre came to Renton in the spring of 1965, when several people approached the local Allied Arts Organization for financial assistance in forming a theatre group. The result of this collaboration was "Send Me No Flowers", which was presented at St. Anthony's Catholic Church Parish Hall for three nights in August. Each night two more rows of seats were added to accommodate all who wanted to attend.
After this success, the group voted to continue and they formally organized, elected officers and became Renton Little Theatre (RLT). The next few years, plays were generally performed in various elementary schools. One exception was the Los Maestros Art Gallery and it eventually became RLT's first headquarters, remodeled gradually to become more like a theatre.
In 1971, having outgrown the rather inadequate facility, RLT contracted to perform their plays at the newly constructed CARCO Theatre, which was, and still is, under the management of the Renton Parks Department. The next change was in the 1972-73 season, when the group decided to change the name to Valley Community Players.
We are still Valley Community Players and we still perform four plays each season at CARCO Theatre. We celebrate each closing season with a banquet where awards, determined by a panel of judges, are presented. Our awards are named "The Vannie", in honor of Vanecia Adderson, one of the original founders. Vanecia is still a member of Valley Community Players.
