PARK HISTORY

In 1973, the Airport Heights community agreed to voluntarily assess their properties in order to create a park. The original price for the six acres of parkland identified for community use was $200,000.00. The city went into partnership with the homeowners, and the city paid $66,000. Over 1,100 people agreed to assessment of their properties, and the balance on the land was paid by the homeowners. This was the first citizen-initiated park district petition in the history of the Municipality of Anchorage.

In 1983, the Parks and Recreation Department began development of the park. A playground and hockey rink were dedicated in 1985. The hockey rink was later renamed after Scotty Gomez (a two time Stanley Cup winner) as this was the rink he played on as a youngster.

The Davenport Fields, on the other side of the park, were named to honor Bill Davenport who helped to build them.
