Every month one member selects a text for reading. On the third Thursday of every month the group will meet and engage in a philosophical inquiry of the literature. Relating to the subject matter a philosophical rapport is developed and as a group we intellectually enter into dialogue. Due to this atmosphere and the volatility of feelings, this guild is not for everyone. Composure and civility is the key, one must be able to have all biases and beliefs challenged and vetted without ejecting itself from the guild in a violent or aggressive upheaval. Those that survive the gauntlet of this atmosphere will emerge more intellectually and holistically developed.
The literary genres and philosophical questions that are analyzed in this guild are as diverse as the group members' cognitions; genres will consist of political, spiritual, mythological, cultural, historic and scientific orientation. The unifying factor here is philosophy, which has three components: metaphysics (the nature of reality and being), epistemology (the nature of knowledge) and axiology (nature of right and wrong, the good and beautiful). Philosophy is intrinsic to all human creation and is elicited by the mind.
The membership requirements are simply the love of reading, critical thinking and brotherhood, along with the ability to diplomatically debate and perpetuate the ongoing growth and expansion of the human mind. The intention of this group is solely to promote and sustain the momentum for the power of the human mind exposed to critical analysis of our beliefs, values and norms, it is through this manner that we are able to Alter Cognition, Alter Reality and Think Beyond. It is a transgression to the human race, especially to the posterity, for any of us to be fundamentalists of any particular garment of mind. We are in the business of mind mutation by drawing forth chaos of thought challenging what we believe. Through this affinity, regardless of diversity or bias, we unite in civil discourse and return for more. We are reestablishing the school of thought.
The guild will meet the third Thursday of every month in a to-be-determined location in Sumter, SC. Members are welcome from all surrounding areas.
