St. Peter School
The essence of the St. Peter School philosophy is primarily the development of the whole person, since in Christ all human values find their fulfillment and unity. This philosophy embraces a constant striving for intellectual excellence, social responsibility, and spiritual formation.
Our aim is to integrate the knowledge and practices of religious truths and values with the knowledge and skills of academic education. The United States Bishop's pastoral, "To teach as Jesus did" states: "this integration of religious truths and values with life distinguishes the Catholic School from other schools."
The aim of our educational program can only be realized to the extent that parents unite with the school to form one cooperative effort for their children's welfare. As an extension of the faith community of the home, we strive to provide the students with experiences that help them to develop the ideas, attitudes, and habits necessary for Christlike living in our American democratic society.
These are the ways in which St. Peter School maintains its philosophy:
Through Religious Instruction
To help the students understand that, as children of God, they have been called to a life of faith, hope and love.
To educate the whole person, building unique personalities, recognizing each child's potential and God given abilities.
To encourage the children to live the Gospel message and to form a personal relationship with God
Through Curriculum and Classroom
To encourage the students to work conscientiously, and thus achieve maximum potential
To provide an atmosphere of praise and encouragement where a child can respond and progress, so they may experience the satisfaction of work successfully completed.
To provide a total learning situation that offers opportunities to acquire the skills needed to establish goals that are attainable and meaningful in their life, to instill, through discipline, the awareness of the dignity of the individual, the importance of respect for the rights of others, and the necessity for self control in our actions so that they might conform to acceptable social standards.
In 1954, it was decided by the Parish of St. Peter and its Pastor, Monsignor William Botticelli, that an elementary school be built for the purpose of providing Catholic instruction and education for the children of the parish. With the delay because of the devastating flood of 1955, actual ground breaking and construction did not take place until February of 1956.
A record breaking campaign to raise funds and build the school made it possible for the school to open on September 5, 1956. On September 23, 1956, the Most Reverend Henry O'Brien, Archbishop of Hartford, laid the cornerstone. Today, St. Peter School stands as a tribute to the foresight and determination of Monsignor Botticelli partnered with the dedicated and generous parishioners of St. Peter Parish.
