About Us:
The Rotary Club of Plainville was founded on February 15, 1955. The first Charter Night was March 14, 1955 at Wright's Steak House on Farmington Ave. in Plainville. We were sponsored by the Rotary Club of Southington. Cadwell Hoerle was one of our four founding members. Caddy is a member today and has maintained perfect attendance since before we were founded. He belonged to the New Britain Rotary prior to 1955.
Our first scholarship award was made on June 27, 1955 to Patty LeBeau for $200. We have long considered scholarships to graduating students of Plainville High School, a central focus of our organization. Over the last ten years we have made over $211,000 in scholarship awards. Our first Christmas Party for Children from the Plainville School System was held in December 1957. We will host our 50th such party in a couple of years. We believe we have entertained over twelve hundred youngsters at these parties.
The Plainville has made a history of donating all funds raised in the same year acquired. This places a responsibility on each President to plan his/her year and reach to exceed previous years. For fifty years this principle has thrived, as has Rotary. Our largest annual fund raiser is the Penny Sale. Our first was on April 12, 1975. In 2005 we will host our thirty-first, and there are still only a half dozen people in town who can explain why it is called a Penny Sale!
