We are a non-profit organization of community leaders that meet weekly to discuss and plan projects to help provide hands-on and financial support to meet local and worldwide humanitarian needs. We support The Rotary Foundation in this endeavor.
HISTORY
"WHATEVER ROTARY MAY MEAN TO US, TO THE WORLD IT WILL BE KNOWN BY THE RESULTS IT ACHIEVES."
PAUL P. HARRIS
Our 1.2 million-member organization started with the vision of one man Paul P. Harris. The Chicago attorney formed one of the world's first service organizations, the Rotary Club of Chicago, on 23 February 1905 as a place where professionals with diverse backgrounds could exchange ideas and form meaningful, lifelong friendships. Rotary's name came from the group's early practice of rotating meetings among the offices of each member.
OUR ONGOING COMMITMENT
Rotarians have not only been present for major events in history we've been a part of them. From the beginning, three key traits have remained strong throughout Rotary:
We're truly international. Only 16 years after being founded, Rotary had clubs on six continents. Today we're working together from around the globe both digitally and in-person to solve some of our world's most challenging problems.
We persevere in tough times. During WWII, Rotary clubs in Germany, Austria, Italy, Spain, and Japan were forced to disband. Despite the risks, many continued to meet informally and following the war's end, Rotary members joined together to rebuild their clubs and their countries.
Our commitment to service is ongoing. We began our fight against polio in 1979 with a project to immunize 6 million children in the Philippines. By 2012, only three countries remain polio-endemic down from 125 in 1988.
OUR STRUCTURE
OUR CLUB
The Rotary Club of Novato Sunrise - A Member of Rotary International - Chartered May 3, 1994 Thinking about becoming a Rotarian? Learn about the Novato Sunrise Club. Our club is composed of professionals and business men and women who live or work in the Novato area. Our members are working in diverse areas such as finance, insurance, waste management, city and municipal government, law, education, the arts, real estate, information technology and physical therapy. We enjoy a breakfast meeting once a week where we socialize, discuss club news, and listen to guest speakers. By 8:30 AM, we are off to our various jobs and pursuits. As Rotarians, we firmly believe in the motto of Rotary International: Service Above Self. Here are some of the many service projects that our club has undertaken. World (International) Community Service Projects. The Novato Sunrise Club has proudly completed service projects involving water, food and health in many parts of the world. Vocational Service Projects. We respect the value in all ethical professions, and our vocational projects have honored persons in this community whose commitment to their work is worthy of recognition. We also use Vocational Service as an opportunity to let our members network to expand their own business efforts. Community Service. Novato is a better, safer place to reside because of local projects our Club has sponsored, financed or completed with hands-on effort. Youth Service. Our many projects involving literacy have helped the students, parents and teachers in all of Novato's schools. Seeking To Network Your Business? As a Rotarian in our club, you will have many opportunities to meet local business decision-makers who can influence your business. From the earliest days of the organization, Rotarians were concerned with promoting high ethical standards in their professional lives. One of the world's most widely printed and quoted statements of business ethics is The 4-Way Test, which was created in 1932 by Rotarian Herbert J. Taylor (who later served as RI president) when he was asked to take charge of a company that was facing bankruptcy. This 24-word test for employees to follow in their business and professional lives became the guide for sales, production, advertising, and all relations with dealers and customers, and the survival of the company is credited to this simple philosophy. Adopted by Rotary in 1943, The 4-Way Test has been translated into more than a hundred languages and published in thousands of ways. It asks the following four questions: "Of the things we think, say or do:
·Is it the TRUTH? ·Is it FAIR to all concerned? ·Will it build GOODWILL and BETTER FRIENDSHIPS? ·Will it be BENEFICIAL to all concerned?" We work hard, and we also play. When people are accepted into our Club, they immediately gain the close friendships of some of Novato's finest citizens. Side by side in our service projects, we hold fast to the commitment that serious work is done best if we make it fun to do, so we regularly have our "Fun n Frolic" events which include dinners, picnics, and outings for special occasions.
