Mission
The mission of the Redlands Symphony is to entertain and educate listeners of all ages by presenting live performances at the highest artistic standard. Consistent with this goal, the Redlands Symphony is committed to maintaining a comprehensive educational outreach program in its role as cultural ambassador to the Inland Empire.
History:
The Redlands Symphony was founded in 1950 by Edward C. Tritt as an adjunct to the Redlands University School of Music. The Redlands Symphony, which was formerly known as the Redlands Winter Concert Association, has had close ties to the University of Redlands from its beginning. In fact, it was once run by the University, but in 1974 a board of directors was given responsibility for the management of the symphony, and formation of the Redlands Winter Concert Association was encouraged in order to provide students and townspeople with opportunities for cultural events-a function earlier performed by the University itself. The Redlands Winter Concert Association functioned as a community concert organization, booking four to six attractions each season, and selling season subscriptions. The Memorial Chapel was made available by the University as a venue for the concerts, and is still used to this day.
The Redlands Winter Concert Association became an independent non-profit 501(c)(3) organization in 1983, and its name was changed in 1985 to The Redlands Symphony Association. The personnel of the orchestra have changed over time from an unpaid mix of faculty, students, and townspeople to a professional ensemble enhanced by highly qualified music students from the University of Redlands, School of Music. Faculty members continue to hold most principal chairs.
The Symphony has a long history of financial stability, demonstrating balanced growth and responsible stewardship for many years. This growth is governed by sound business principles established by the Board of Directors-a dedicated group that continues to inspire the Symphony's commitment to fiscal excellence.
The Redlands Symphony Orchestra's remarkable growth under the baton of Maestro Jon Robertson has amazed critics, delighted audiences and caused the prestigious California Arts Council panel to award their highest "exemplary" rating for seven consecutive seasons. Its panel commented, "This is a remarkable, strong orchestra, boasting fine ensemble playing, attention to detail and a rich, orchestral sound." The Redlands Symphony also currently has more subscribers than any other arts organization in the Inland area.
