About
Although the Opelika Chamber has been incorporated for 75 years, we can trace its history back to 1910. In the early days, it was the Chamber leaders who spearheaded most of the economic development for the city. Businesses like the Pepperell Manufacturing plant and the U.S. Rubber’s Southern Tire Manufacturing plant were two of the large companies that decided to make their home in Opelika in this period. The purpose then was to promote the commercial, industrial, agricultural and civic interests of the City of Opelika and the surrounding area.
That purpose is still relevant today but with many additions. Babe Ruth said, “Yesterday’s home runs don’t win today’s games.” While we appreciate those that have paved the way, the Chamber knows it must keep evolving to promote and foster economic and business success and maximize member investment, while enhancing the community.
The Chamber has been very instrumental in the growth and prosperity of Opelika and its citizens. Today, the Chamber has over 200 events, programs and advertising opportunities for its members plus an array of benefits. We believe that it’s our honor, privilege and responsibility to help make Opelika a progressive city, yet still keep the unique charm of our heritage. As 1925 Chamber President, J.S. Hagedorn, said,” Every business and professional man (or woman) should be a chamber member. It is his badge of progressive citizenship.”
Our past Chairmen have played a vital role in the success of the Opelika Chamber. We wanted to honor them on our 75th Anniversary by putting many of them on the cover and listing them on the inside of the magazine. Without their vision and leadership, our Chamber might not be recognized as one of the top Chambers in the state and nation and have a 4-Star Accreditation.
For three-quarters of a century, the Opelika Chamber has worked very hard to promote and foster economic and business success while enhancing the community. It is a pleasure to celebrate this Diamond Anniversary with you. Thank you to the citizens of Opelika, Lee County and especially our Chamber members for your tremendous support over the years. It takes all of us working together to persevere.
