Northport Symphony Orchestra

History:

In the Fall of 2006, our predecessor organization, The Northport Community Orchestra, was formed as an affiliate of The Northport Chorale, Inc., and we held our first rehearsal in January 2007.

Under the leadership of Music Director Richard Hyman, an East Northport resident and award-winning music educator, the orchestra debuted in May 2007 at the Chorale's 25th anniversary concert.

In 2008, the orchestra incorporated as its own entity and serves as the only community orchestra on the north shore of Suffolk County, NY, that rehearses in the evening, thereby offering musicians who work during daytime hours the opportunity to rehearse and perform classical music.

In January 2010, we officially changed our name to the Northport Symphony Orchestra.

Our members, who are selected by audition, come from all walks of life. They include music educators, physicians, attorneys, engineers, librarians, business owners, retirees, and college students.

The enjoyment of playing music and of making it accessible to all members of the community through free concerts keeps us together and motivated.
