Big City Mountaineers (BCM) was created to enhance the lives of under-resourced urban teens through a transformative outdoor experience. In MN, the core program is an eight-day expedition, the focus of which is a five-day canoeing journey in the Boundary Waters Canoe Area in the summer. BCM partners with existing youth development agencies, matching adult volunteers with at-risk teens to create a 5-to-5 ratio of adults to teens on each expedition. We wish to provide a backcountry experience for the teens guided in a wilderness setting by adult volunteers who wish to make a difference in their lives.
