Big City Mountaineers (BCM) instills critical life skills in under-served urban youth through transformative wilderness mentoring expeditions. The core program in the Midwest, taking place in the summer months, is an 8-day, single-gender backpacking expedition with a ratio of 5 teens to 4 adults. Working with community-based youth agencies and caring adults who act as mentors in the field, our professionally guided programs improve integrity, self-esteem, responsibility, decision-making abilities and communication skills. BCM results show that youth return to their urban homes with the motivation and purpose to make positive changes in their lives including staying in school and avoiding drugs and delinquency. |
