History:
The Artists’ Workshop, Inc., a non-profit organization, had its beginnings in 1957 when fifteen art enthusiasts met in a local restaurant and formed New Smyrna’s first chartered art group. The original charter adopted in March 1958 stated "the purpose of this organization shall be to foster and encourage art and its appreciation, to create friendly and sympathetic relations in club and community, promoting and exchanging ideas among members, and to further opportunities for participation in classes and show."
The Workshop makes available its studio facilities for art classes and workshops approved by the Artists’ Workshop Board. While many of our members attend these classes, attendance is not a requirement for membership.
In December 1980, the Artists’ Workshop Gallery was opened. Its purpose is to give each member an opportunity to display his or her work in an attractive atmosphere for public viewing. All members are eligible to show their current work. Exhibits are changed monthly, with different themes each month. In a Community Exhibits Program, members’ work is also on display in public building in the community.
In February 1993, the Artists’ Workshop Memorial Library was established and is dedicated to the memory of those who have inspired us with their love of art. The library presently contains over 400 art books and videotapes.
General Membership meetings are open to members and their guests. Following the Business Meeting, there is a demonstration by a qualified artist, or an art related lecture by a guest speaker.
