The Alliance Française is the largest network of French language and cultural centers in the world. There are 1200 alliance chapters established in 112 countries, including 120 chapters in the United States, serving 420,000 students. The Alliance Française is dedicated to promoting French language and culture and to fostering friendly relations between Francophiles of all racial, national and ethnic origins.

In Providence

The French Alliance of Providence began in 1901, 17 years after the birth of the Fédération of the Alliances A founding member and the second president of the organization was Mary C. Wheeler, namesake of a prestigious Providence school. Since 1901, the Alliance has fostered the study and celebration of many aspects of the French-speaking world.

Mission statement

The Alliance Française de Providence is a non-profit organization which promotes French language and culture in order to encourage intellectual, artistic and cultural exchange between the people of the United States and the Francophone world.

If you are looking for a French translator, the Alliance can help you get in touch with the right person. You can also use the library which offers a good selection of classic and contemporary French literature for children and adults.

Cultural events and activities

We offer many cultural events and activities throughout the year where everyone is invited to participate. You will meet many French speaking people from around the globe as well as people who are learning French and people who do not speak any French!

We have concerts, holiday parties, movie nights, monthly luncheons, coffee mornings, drama club, book club, chorale, wine festivals, lectures, plays, Bastille day, Mardi Gras, children's parties.
