The Portals opening this week

Beatriz Cortez: The Portals is an installation in multiple locations that explores alternative genealogies of Williams College. Opening this Friday, May 26, and running through May 2024, The Portals stitches together different voices that inhabited the landscape that became Western Massachusetts and invites viewers to coexist with various people who have believed in equality, justice, curiosity, diversity, and freedom in the area where Williamstown was created.

The Portals consists of three outdoor installations on Main Street: Historic House, located next to Hopkins Hall; XX,  in front of Griffin Hall; and Mohican Homelands, located behind the Hopkins Observatory. And inside the museum are two installations: Speculative Speech by Lucy Terry Prince in the Rotunda; and, located in the adjacent Stoddard Gallery, Ancient Object Labeled as Human Head Wearing a Peaked Headdress, One Migrant to Another, in Memory of your True Name and your Land and Ancient Object Labeled as Human Head Emerging from Monster Jaws, One Migrant to Another, in Memory of your True Name and your Land.

Youth engagement opportunity

We are still looking for youths ages 10-18 who want to explore WCMA this summer during a fellowship as part of our Construct Your Own Meaning summer series! The deadline to apply has been extended to May 30.

During this eight-day fellowship (July 26-Aug. 3), these youths will have the opportunity to learn about every career in the museum, visit behind-the-scenes areas to discover WCMA’s collection of art, and expand how we understand what a museum is and who it serves.

These young fellows will study the museum’s Remixing the Hall exhibition in preparation for a public tour on Aug. 3. The fellowship is free for participants and is open to regional residents who can attend all sessions and the public event. Each fellow will receive an art kit valued at $75 in exchange for their participation.

Women of Williams at WCMA

In celebration of 50 years of coeducation at Williams College, alumnae of every age and stage were invited to campus last weekend to share their journeys and to be their most authentic selves. As part of this Women of Williams Conference, WCMA hosted a special tour and discussion focused on Object Lab with Bethany Hicok, Lecturer in English. Bethany gave the group a taste of what it's like to take one of her Feminist Poetry classes that utilizes works from WCMA's collection to explore connections among language, art, and activism.

Also as part of the conference, Pamela Franks, WCMA's Class of 1954 Director, moderated the panel conversation Opening Doors, Creating Spaces: Making Art Accessible, featuring Mikka Gee Conway MA '98, Rachel Watts '97, and Stephanie Dockery '07.
