From: Williams College Museum of ArtEmbodied Words closing soon
The two-year run of Embodied Words: Reading in Medieval Christian Visual Culture is coming to a close. If you haven't had a chance to see it or would like to experience it one last time, you have two more weeks!
In the Middle Ages, reading was thought to change you, physically and spiritually. Medieval people believed that words written and read, spoken and heard, could imprint on the brain, heart, and soul. The senses mediated the reception of these words. This exhibition, culling from artworks from WCMA’s collection and manuscripts from the Chapin Library, has demonstrated the embodied nature of reading in Christian Europe from the twelfth through the sixteenth centuries.
Embodied Words closes on Sunday, March 10, to be followed by Cracking the Cosmic Code: Numerology in Medieval Art, opening March 22. Also curated by Assistant Curator Elizabeth Sandoval, this exhibition will encourage visitors to think about numbers instead of words in artwork from WCMA’s collection.
