Virtual Event: 70 Years of TV News with Brian Rose
[Online] 7 pm Tuesday, January 24th
And That's the Way It Is: A Look Back at 70 Years of TV News, with Brian Rose
Television news has undergone some remarkable transformations over the decades. Brian Rose, professor of Communications and Media Studies at Fordham University, will give a presentation on the history of broadcast television, including the Camel News Caravan, Walter Cronkite, and the 24/7 news cycle. We will learn about MSNBC and the Fox News Channel, which introduced a more partisan approach to news coverage that would have enormous implications for American political life. The talk will also look at these sweeping changes and examine the impact (both positive and negative) of television journalism over the past seven decades.
This program has been generously funded by the Friends of the Edgartown, West Tisbury, Vineyard Haven, Chilmark, and Oak Bluffs Public Libraries.

New Online Learning Resource for Library Users
Anyone who lives, resides part-time to attend school, owns property, or works in Massachusetts can access additional Boston Public Library's online resources by registering for a BPL eCard. Online eCard registration is easy and free, and provides access to all of thelibrary's digital resources including LinkedIn Learning.
LinkedIn Learning is a premier online learning resource featuring 16,000 courses from recognized experts in their fields, covering software, technical skills, creative techniques, business strategies, career development, and more. Learning is self-paced and courses and tutorials are broken up into short videos, so it’s easy to squeeze in just a few minutes of learning a day if that’s all the time you have. Courses are offered in English, French, German, Japanese, Spanish, Mandarin, and Portuguese.
To use the free collection of LinkedIn Learning courses, do not visit LinkedIn Learning directly. Always follow links from bpl.org to access the subscription portal. LinkedIn Learning requires that users be at least 16 years old, but a public LinkedIn profile is not required for access.
LinkedIn Learning can also be used on your mobile device with an app available in the Apple App Store and Google Play. When you sign in on the app, don't enter your email. Click "Sign in with your library card" instead. When asked for the Library ID, enter bostonpubliclibrary (all one word) so LinkedIn knows you're a BPL user, then log in with your library card and PIN.

Whole Grains vs. Refined Grains: A Virtual Talk with Jeanne Schumacher
Whole grains are grains that haven't had their bran and germ removed by milling; therefore, all of the nutrients remain intact. They are excellent sources of fiber and other important nutrients, such as selenium, potassium and magnesium. Refined grains are milled, a process that strips out both the bran and germ to give them a finer texture and longer shelf life. Learn more about the differences, the impact on your health, and why so many people suddenly have a gluten intolerance. Jeanne Schumacher, M.Ed., Ed.D., earned her doctorate in science and education, has taught for over 35 years, and earned her Nutrition Certificate through eCornell - Center for Nutritional Studies. Sponsored by CLAMS libraries. Register
