From: Utah SymphonyFORMER RESIDENT ARTIST RETURNS AS OPERA LEAD (AND MENTOR)
In October, we wrapped our first Utah Opera production of the 2023-24 season, Puccini’s La bohème, and included in our talented cast was a familiar face—tenor Chris Oglesby!
A Utah Opera Resident Artist (RA) in 2017 and 2018, Oglesby returned to the Janet Quinney Lawson Capitol Theatre to perform the leading tenor role of Rodolfo. But the best part? His first-ever production with us during his RA days was also La bohème, when he portrayed the charming toy-seller Parpignol!
For this fall's production, Jeremiah Tyson, a new RA with Utah Opera this season, stepped up to the role of toy-seller and puppeteer. Oglesby, recognizing the similarity of their situations not so long ago, quickly took Tyson under his wing to share his experience and insight.
It’s these moments of mentorship that build the foundation of our Resident Artist program—it creates opportunities for growth and lasting connections.

Utah Symphony Brings in New Audiences with First Masterworks Magnified Concert
In its stunning debut, our October Masterworks Magnified concert, featuring Rachmaninoff's Symphony No. 2 (and other spooky music!), brought audience members into the depths of the Halloween season.
Patrons heard eerie sound effects demonstrated by percussionists, grabbed graveyard photos, had their fortunes read, and learned insights about the music with commentary from the stage.
Masterworks Magnified is perfect for newcomers and symphony lovers alike, allowing them to experience our music like never before—and this performance welcomed about 500 new faces!
Students Develop Focus During the School Day Through New Mindful Music Moments Program
Our Mindful Music Moments program is making waves in 22 Utah schools, including 14 Title 1 institutions! Introduced at the beginning of this school year, the innovative program enables students to deeply connect to music through guided listening and mindfulness exercises in the classroom.
“This program gives students—and just as importantly, teachers—a moment of stillness and reflection,” says Director of Education & Community Engagement Ben Kipp.
“My students are more attentive and calm down more quickly,” affirms a participating teacher. “The students come back into a proactive learning mode. Having a social-emotional learning program in my classroom is huge!”
Itzhak Perlman Played a Sold-Out Concert—and “Deseret News” Came to Rehearsal
“If you need just one example of how the arts are alive and well in Utah, look back to this past Saturday, when the Utah Symphony performed to a full house at Abravanel Hall,” wrote Deseret News, who attended rehearsal for the Utah Symphony’s highly anticipated performance with legend Itzhak Perlman.
The sold-out celebratory evening featuring one of the world’s most renowned soloists highlights the value the arts have in this great state, as time and time again, fellow Utahns join together and return to Abravanel Hall to experience top-tier, live classical entertainment.
To quote Deseret News: “Make no mistake: the arts are alive and well in Utah.”
Charles Boynton Names Opera Resident Artist Position
We are grateful that Charles Boynton has committed a four-year pledge to Utah Opera in support of our Resident Artist Mezzo position! In recognition of this generous gift, we have named the position the “Charles Boynton Mezzo-soprano.”
French American mezzo-soprano Sarah Scofield (pictured above), who joined our RA program at the beginning of this season (and was a winner of the Utah District round of the Metropolitan Opera Laffont Competition!), currently holds this position.
