Happy New Year! The best way to start 2024 is by attending some of the great events featured in this issue of EventSource. From a brass quartet performance by the Capital Philharmonic of New Jersey to a Science Under the Stars show at the NJ state museum, there are plenty of fun experiences to try out this January.

MLK Day of Service
PRESENTED BY: City of Trenton Department of Recreation, Natural Resources & Culture
LOCATION: Trenton City Hall Atrium
Join the City of Trenton for a day of service in celebration of Martin Luther King Jr. Day. Throughout the morning, guests will have the opportunity to get involved in a number of hands-on projects which will support local non-profit organizations making a difference in our community.

Brass Quartet: Bach to Broadway and Beyond
PRESENTED BY: Capital Philharmonic of New Jersey

Led by CPNJ and Philly POPS trumpeter Bob Gravener, explore music from Bach to Broadway and beyond with a brass quartet, featuring selections from Gabrieli and Bach, to selections from The Man of La Mancha and Caruso!

Small Explorers: Planetarium Lunar Adventure

This month in our Small Explorers program we’re attending a planetarium showing of “The Moon” and will be reading the book “Love You to the Moon and Back” by Amelia Hepworth and Tim Warnes. We will explore the wonders of the moon through a planetarium program and engaging activities. Together, we’ll learn about the moon’s phases, textures, and stories while fostering curiosity and creativity in our young participants.

Science Under the Stars: Strange New Worlds
PRESENTED BY: New Jersey State Museum
LOCATION: 205 W State St.
Join us in the Planetarium for this free talk by Dr. Josh Winn, Princeton professor and author of “The Little Book of Exoplanets.” Dr. Winn explains why it took so long to find exoplanets, what new technologies and techniques were required, and what kinds of planets have been found. Recent advances have revealed bizarre new planets unlike anything in the solar system, while also bringing us to the threshold of finding other planets similar to Earth.

Artist Talk: Ken Alexander
PRESENTED BY: Trenton Free Public Library
LOCATION: 120 Academy St.
Ken Alexander is a self-taught Trenton based painter whose work specializes in human experiences in various settings using abstractions. The art is nothing short of breathtaking. His work will been on display at the museum through January 2, when this art talk takes place.

“Ghetto Gods in Divineland,” written by Richard Bradford and Anthony Martinez-Briggs, and directed by Ozzie Jones, tells the story of the unheard community of Divineland and how far its residents will go for representation and reclamation of their resources.

Red White and Brew Fest

LOCATION: CURE Insurance Arena, Trenton
In the late 1750s, George Washington inscribed a recipe “to make small beer” in a notebook he carried during the French and Indian War. Today we celebrate this moment in beer history with a patriotic sampling event featuring over 50 styles from featured craft breweries, wineries, and spirits.

Caroline Burton: Way Finding
PRESENTED BY: New Jersey State Museum
LOCATION: 205 W. State St., Trenton
The New Jersey Artists Series returned on September 23 with the opening of the exhibition “Caroline Burton: Way Finding.” Burton, based in Jersey City, draws on architectural and agricultural forms, nature and elements of chance for inspiration in her process-driven canvases. An exhibition catalog will be available in the Museum Shop in October.

Stop by the Trenton City Museum to see the newest exhibition, Next: Reimagining the Future Through Art. There are 40 works from 30 different artists across multiple genres. The exhibit was juried and curated by Diane Ciccone and Jane Malloy.
